“Current Perspectives on the History of Guns and Society”

Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT

The Center for the Study of Guns & Society will host its 3rd annual conference on October 18–19, 2024. Scholars, museum curators, and students from around the country will gather for two days of discussions on a wide range of historical topics related to firearms.

Presenters will include: LK Bertram, Holly Brewer, Saul Cornell, Leah Glaser, Richard Glover, Maryam Gooyabadi, Stephen Hargarten, Justin Joyce, Josh Koskoff, Glenn LaVertu, Jen McCutcheon, Andrew McLevitt, Matthew Miller, Jack N. Rakove, Brennan Rivas, Kelly Sampson, Geoff Schumacher, Joseph Slaughter, Kevin Sweeney, Jennifer Tucker, and Terrence Witkowski.

Panels will address historical and contemporary perspectives on topics including:

  • U.S. gun violence and health
  • Lethality studies
  • Reflections on Rahimi, the Rust trial, and the post-Heller legal landscape
  • Guns and movies (lessons from the RUST trial)
  • The entwinements of guns and culture in the U.S. from the 18th century to the present

Participants are also invited on special field trips and a walking tour of Middletown, CT, focused on the origins of New England gun manufacturing.
